"Three VCSELs and three photodiodes" while holding a 4 fiber bundle. Thunderbolt 3 has a requirement for 4 lanes (2 up and 2 down), so unless I am missing something you guys messed up in the video. Not that it really matters, but hey.

  20. Djordje Blaga

    Djordje Blaga6 päivää sitten

20GBit/s is nothing. Singlemode fibers can easily transmit up to 80 or 128 Channels of 100Gbit/s simultaneously on one pair (RX/TX). Also yes this is by far the easiest solution but you can always get a bunch of media converters and transmit your grandmothers TV signal from one end of your house to the other.

Optical Thunderbolt cables? Please. Who here remembers Light Peak? Anyone? Okay… Yes, Light Peak, which used fiber optics, was the code name for Thunderbolt before they concluded that copper wires was good enough for the signal (and, added bonus, *power*). It wouldn't surprise me if the spec still has info on how a TB optical cable should work.

Fun fact, everytime you had a corner in an optical cable, it slows down the speed of the signal. 50 meters of straight line is faster than 50 meters of "rolled" optical cable (because the light has to bounce on the walls of the core of the cable. It never moves in a perfect straight line inside the cable. (I learnt this in ground military equipment maintenance classes).

Very nice product. However, I'd have expected them to run two copper wires to allow that cable to transfer power in addition to data. It's not like adding power lines to that cable could cause any interference and the cost of required copper would be neglible for the actual cost of this cable.

  45. matrox58

Why does a 5 meter cable cost $360 and a 50 meter cable cost $480? That makes no sense. That a 50 meter costs $120 more. At 10 times the length, wouldn't it have to cost 10 times the price ($3600)?

Great video. I think you guys should consider making a video on solutions for longform HDMI 2.1 cables, or another solution, as myself and others have had a really hard time finding a long HDMI 2.1 cable that reliably does 4k@120hz over 30ft (9 meters) without dropping. Most of them don't even do 4k @120hz as advertised. It took me 4 tries to a 55' that worked but ideally I need a 65' and I don't want to risk another $200 on a stinker. I was even out of $150 cause of one I bought months prior to getting my 3080, which didn't work and was well passed the return period. Sigh. Thanks you guys for all that you do!

Actually Linus.... I bought a green led from radio shack in 2005, aimed and shot a green laser at it, and got voltage on a multi-meter attacked to the two pins of the green led whenever the laser hit it.. So theoretically you actually could potentially transfer power over that fiber optic cable at some point in time as technology progresses.

  50. Mike Levine

    Mike Levine10 päivää sitten

Ok, that is just simply unbelievably cool. Believe it or not, in 1981, I was in the Navy and we ran fiber from the "Server Room" [note: back then a 5MB drive was those multi-platter 2311 disk storage units], and the fiber was brittle and failed and was expensive and people literally lost their job for screwing up. (Let's not talk about $1,000 toilet seats). For me, this is such a cool advance. 50 meters is significant. Great find LInus. If I could do 5 thumbs up I would give it.

"what can we not transmit over fiber optics? power!" Wrong, there are actually fiber optic cables that transmit power too. In the form of high power lasers that get converted into electricity at the receiving device. They're not as thin though and and heat is an unavoidable issue.

  60. Willium_Bob_Cole

how hard would it be to just put a couple copper cables down this thing to also deliver power? I don't know how useful it would be for most real-world use-cases, but at the very least, it could maybe add further strength, right? Speaking of strength, your demonstration was compelling, but I would like to see a test on fatigue from less extreme but highly repetitive bending. At this price point, you want to be DAMN sure it's gonna stand the test of time. Wrenching on it a couple times and surviving is one thing, but what if you had it running under the carpet and you had less than stable floorboards, there might be spots along the cable that are subjected to small but frequent disturbances from just walking around that could add up to big problems, and that's not to mention running it under/over/around doors etc. Anyways I'm just holding out for the wireless future, no cables ever again, even for power, anything less is a stop-gap

Practical Use: I recently purchased a Vive Eye VR headset with WiGig Wireless, which requires that the computer be near the play area for wireless connectivity. But I also use my computer in my office across the house, and need dual monitors to work. Corning 50m cable and a thunderbolt 3 hub was the perfect solution with no performance hit. I have had no issues and love the setup, both for VR work and Office computer work flawlessly. I am blown away at this cables ability to function it does not make sense to me. This cable defies logic! Probably could have built a whole new PC for the cost though.
